Serbian media: United Group is for sale, BC Partners is frantically looking for a buyer for the indebted owner of Vivacom

Investment fund BC Partners wants to get rid of Dragan Šolak and sell its share in United Group, but cannot find a buyer, reported Serbian media Politika.rs, Informer.rs, Telegraf Business and others. Most worrying for the fund is the behavior of the Serbian Sholak, which is described in business circles as "extreme". The London-based fund bought a stake in United Group from the US group KKR in 2019 for 2.56 billion euros, which has held a stake in the group since March 2014.

BC Partners' five-year holding cycle in United Group is coming to an end, and this is the usual "exit" period for the investment. According to media sources, a buyer was supposed to be found as early as December of this year, but this did not happen because "no one wants to do business with Sholak." The main reason is the group's liabilities, which in 2022 have grown to 7.13 billion euros, the media reported, citing the Greek Capital.gr and the group's official financial results. According to an analysis by the American investment bank JP Morgan, United Group's losses increased from 103.35 million euros in 2021 to as much as 227.03 million euros. Unofficial data indicate that in 2023 the loss will reach 400 million euros, writes Politika.

The Serbian publication also cited the case of Capital.gr – the Greek media that reported on the poor financial condition of Sholak's group. After the publication, United Group froze all advertising budgets, and the editorial office was sent a warning to stop covering the group, Politika claimed. A particular concern among the group's investors is the loss of customers in all markets except Slovenia where United operates - it is expected that in 2024 the market share of the operator SBB in Serbia will fall to below 40%, while in the period 2000-2018 was practically a monopoly and the largest provider of Internet and television.

Among the reasons for this decline is the growth of the main competitor Telecom Serbia, as well as Sholak's appetite to dominate the market in Greece and Bulgaria, which put the group in a debt spiral. According to Politika, Šolak has declared war on Telecom Serbia and is working with the biggest lobbying firms in the US and the EU to attack the telecom in an attempt to slow its growth. His strongest weapon is the media – in Serbia, Sholak owns N1 and Nova, which constantly attack the competition. This approach has been criticized even in Croatia, where the Media Daily portal said that "the media from the United group openly manipulates the truth in the interests of their owners". In Bulgaria, United Group owns Nova TV, as well as the Netinfo group, which includes a number of sites and newspapers such as Telegraf, DarikNews, Vesti, etc., which positively reflect every step of the Vivacom telecom on almost every site.

In Bulgaria, United Group bought Vivacom for the astronomical sum of 937 million euros from the owner connected to the Russian VTB Bank and Delta Capital International. Sholak bought the media directly from the appointees of the former rulers, some of whom were sanctioned under international law.

Serbian media reports that the United Group has also gone to war with the Austrians in the form of A1 Bulgaria, part of Telecom Austria, which has signaled the EC and the Austrian government about the attempt to acquire Bulsatcom by creating a "monopoly never seen in Bulgaria", despite the huge consolidated market share of over 60%.

In addition to this, BC Partners is also worried about the group's actions in North Macedonia, where the machinations of the company Total TV Makedonija led to the financial police raiding the offices and conducting a search, with 38 financial inspectors dealing with the case. There are also problems in Greece, writes Politika. In July of this year, the To Vima newspaper announced that United Group had received 100 million euros from the EU for a project to develop an optical and 5G network in Greece, but "tens of months later there is no progress on the project" < a i=3> The biggest clash between BC Partners and United Group is at the level of Sholak and the Greek partner Nikos Stathopoulos, who keep talking against each other, the Greek portal In.gr claims. According to Greek media, Stathopoulos is unhappy with the way United Group runs the business under "Balkan rules". Sholak was also unhappy because his Greek partner had promised huge investments in Greece due to close ties with Prime Minister Mitsotakis, but they did no

t materialize.
