The Google Phone, Unlocked (Confirmed And More Details)

The phone itself is being built by HTC, with a lot of input from Google. It seems to be a tailored version of the HTC Passion or the related HD2 (Unlocker scored some leaked pictures back in October which are of the same phone).

Here are the details we know so far about the phone: It will be called the Google Phone and will launch in early January, 2010. It won’t be sold by any one carrier, but instead will be an unlocked GSM phone. In the U.S., that means T-Mobile and possibly AT&T, whose exclusivity deal with the iPhone is about to run out. It will be running Android 2.1

The phone is “really, really fast,” says someone who has seen one in action. It runs on a Snapdragon chip, has a super high-resolution OLED touchscreen, is thinner than the iPhone, has no keyboard, and two mics. The mic on the back of the phone helps eliminate background noise, and it also has a “weirdly” large camera for a phone. And if you don’t like the touchscreen keyboard, a voice-to-text feature is supposed to let you dictate emails and notes by speaking directly into the phone.

An Android dogfood diet for the holidays

We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it.

Exclusive: first Google Phone / Nexus One photos, Android 2.1 on-board

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/3707/nexusmain2.jpg

Well here you have it folks, honest-to-goodness pics of the Google Phone... AKA, the Nexus One. As you can see by the photos, the design of the device is largely similar to those we've seen, but the graphic on back is slightly different, and that piece of tape is covering a QR code (how very Google of them). Just like we've heard before, the updated OS features new 3D elements to the app tray, as well as an extended amount of homescreens, though it looks like the lock screen / mute is the same as in Android 2.0.1. Additionally, there's now a new grid icon at the bottom of the homescreen, which when pressed brings up a webOS card-style preview of all homescreen pages -- which raises some interesting possibilities. Apparently there's been a new software update for the device pushed tonight, and sure enough the phone is identified as the Nexus One on the system info page. Quite clearly this device is running on T-Mobile, and is also using WiFi, so there's two other questions you've got answers to. The phone also appears to come loaded up with Google Navigation (a bit of a no-brainer) and the brand-spanking-new Google Goggles. Hardware wise, the Nexus does look incredibly thin and sleek, and while there's not a slew of buttons (those four up front are clearly touch sensitive), there is a dedicated volume rocker along the side. Oh, and note this... no HTC logo anywhere to be found. We'll update the post as / if we get more info, but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery below!

Update: One item of interest. In the packaging there's a quick start guide which points users to a "questions" page at google.com/phone/support. The page is a dead end right now, but it certainly gets an eyebrow raise from us. If there is a real Google Phone in the offing, that seems a likely landing page for support.

What this desire really comes from, of course, is Americans' desperate wish (and it is all about Americans; the rest of the world doesn't have this problem) to see the iPhone on a carrier other than AT&T.

Americans have for years felt that their wireless carriers are holding them back. They feel like they can't pick whatever device they want on the best possible network for them. That's true. That's the way our market works. That's unlikely to change before about 2013, even if then. It's frustrating that we can't seem to do anything about it.

Americans feel abandoned by supposedly customer-friendly Apple, who did so much to advance the state of handheld technology but just can't quit AT&T. So now they're looking to Google, whose motto is "don't be evil," to liberate them.

This is unlikely to happen. Let me explain why.

The U.S. uses two incompatible radio standards on three different spectrum bands. It's possible to build a GSM phone that supports T-Mobile and AT&T, sure. But folks who want Sprint and Verizon will still be out in the cold, because the network-based controls on those carriers can actually lock out unapproved phones. Never mind that while you can build a phone that supports 3G on three carriers, I've never seen a chipset that supports all four.

If Google releases an unlocked GSM phone in the U.S., it's unlikely to sell many units, because it will be seen as prohibitively expensive. Americans rely on carrier subsidies to make device prices look palatable. The iPhone actually costs $599, but what most people see is the $199 price after its carrier subsidy. Google could release a truly $199 phone, but they'd lose a huge amount of money on every sale.

I hate America's addiction to phone subsidies, but it's a very uphill battle to try to fight it.

Remember, unlocked smartphones have been available here for years. Nokia has been trying to push them on people for ages. Some of Nokia's phones, such as the N95 and E71, have been excellent. Almost nobody buys them, because they're seen as too expensive without the carrier subsidy.

I spent some time yesterday, the 14th and the morning of the 15th going through all the library files and various other system files from the Nexus One ROM and I have put together a running list of the hardware I found referenced in there. Here is what I have found so far. I will update with more as I find it. UPDATE: Snapdragon Specific Libraries found.

* Proximity Sensor/Light Sensor: Capella CM3602 per sensors.mahimahi.so in Nexus One ROM Dump.

* Accelerometer: BMA150 3-axis Accelerometer per sensors.mahimahi.so in Nexus One ROM Dump.

* Magnetic Compass: AK8973 3-axis Magnetic field sensor/AK8973 Orientation sensor per sensors.mahimahi.so in Nexus One ROM Dump.

* Wifi Radio / Bluetooth / FM: BCM4329 in lib/modules

* In libaudio.so I found “Routing audio to Speakerphone with back mic” reference.

* In libaudio.so I found “Stereo FM speaker” also referenced.

* Audience A1026 Noise Canceling Chip – No link but here is the A1024 found in libaudio.so

* Qualcomm QSD8K Specific hardware libs in lib/hw (QSD8250 Probably)

* Adreno 200 Graphics Core with OpenGLES 2.0 – Part of Snapdragon?

* Camera Info Vague, found some references to auto focus, flash, white balance and anti-banding in libcamera.so

I am interested mostly in the BCM4329 as it has support for 802.11n and FM Tx and Rx. I’m not sure 802.11n would really be necessary, but it’s good to know it’s there, just in case someone wants exploit that. I did see a screen shot not too long ago of the Motorola Sholes with an FM software app in Android, so that is a possibility. One last thing about the camera. We know it will be at least 5MP based on the uploaded photos in Picasa. We know it has flash and autofocus, but I am not able to find a specific manufacturer or model number.

I just played with the Google Nexus One for a few minutes, Here’s my report:

- It’s extremely thin

- It’s much nicer looking in person than in pictures

- There’s a 4 GB micro-SD card installed

- The battery capacity is 1400 mAh

- The screen appears to be OLED (same size/resolution as the Motorola Droid)

- 3G works on T-Mobile USA

- I can confirm that there’s no 3G on AT&T (EGDE only)

- It’s definitely unlocked

- It’s super snappy! Faster than the Droid…

- There’s no multitouch support in the browser or in Google Maps

- There’s no dedicated camera key, but it’s the same camera interface as the Droid

- The trackball can be used to focus (like on other HTC devices)

- Low-light performance is decent, but the flash is weak

- Calls are routed the normal way, not using data (VoIP), and sound fine

- The home screen is divided into 5 panes (like the Sense interface on the HTC Hero)

- It’s using a micro-USB connector for data/power

- There are some gold contacts at the bottom edge, for a dock perhaps?

- Did I mention it’s fast?

Λογικά αφού το ίδιο chipset φοράνε Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 αυτά δεν θα τα έχει;
