Xperia Z5 Premium MirrorWe thought that 4K UHD (2160 x 3840) resolution in a 5.5-inch IPS display was fantasy-talk, when the rumours first started to appear. Looks like Sony has created the magic with the Xperia Z5 Premium (E6853) and Xperia Z5 Premium Dual (E6833 and E6883) that has just been announced at IFA. The handset becomes the first smartphone in the world to feature a 4K resolution display.

 

This resolution means the 5.5-inch screen packs an insane 806 PPI pixel density. It also has a screen-to-phone ratio of 71.25%. The phone will come with 4K Ultra HD upscaling technology to take advantage of the display. Like previous handsets, 4K video recording will be supported, but the Xperia Z5 Premium will also allow you to create 8MP still images from any footage. Any 4K content can also be exported to a 4K television over DLNA or MHL 3.0.

If you thought trying to drive this many pixels would kill the battery, you’d be wrong. Sony claims that the Xperia Z5 Premium will still have the same ‘two-day’ battery found in the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact. The handset has a battery capacity of 3430mAh and supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0. We don’t know whether this battery life is achieved through a new “extended standby” mode which turns off apps and functions when the display is not used. A quick press of the power button reinstates all functions.

 

The Xperia Z5 Premium design differs from the Z5 and Z5 Compact with the inclusion of a mirror effect on the back, but does also include the precision-etched XPERIA logo on the side like the other handsets in the Z5 family. The other key feature is the fingerprint sensor power button found in all of the Xperia Z5 series.

 

The handset sports the same camera found in the Z5, a 1/2.3-inch 23MP Exmor RS sensor with F2.0 G-Lens on the rear with a 5.1MP Exmor R sensor on the front. This means the rear camera is capable of 0.03 second hybrid autofocus using Phase detection AF (PDAF) for faster shutter speed response and Contrast detection AF for added precision.

 

The Xperia Z5 Premium is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 MSM8994 chipset (2.0GHz/1.5GHz processor and Adreno 430 graphics) and 3GB RAM. Other features include 32GB internal storage (21.7GB usable), microSD memory card support, IP65/IP68 certification for dust and water resistance, capless USB charging, Bluetooth 4.1 and NFC.

 

The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium has dimensions of 154 x 76 x 7.8mm and weighs 180 grams. The handset will launch in November 2015 in three colours: Black, Gold and Chrome.

Πάντως ενα αρνητικό τουλάχιστον για εμένα ότι ειναι copy-paste στο φινίρισμα περιμετρικά και στην πλάτη με το z3+,ενώ το regular z5 εχει το frosted glass πίσω που λες αντίο σε δαχτυλιες και αποτυπώματα.

 

Επίσης κάνει χρήση ατσάλι ενώ στο z5 αλουμινίου περιμετρικά.

Απο την αλλη, δε μαρεσει το πλαστικο οταν βλεπω τοσο μεταλο στα υπολοιπα..ζηλευω!!

και επειδη δε βλεπω καποιο λογο να παω σε αλλη εταιρεια, νομιζω οτι θα παιξω με τα Ζ5 φετος παλι.

Ισως χτυπησω κανα Ζ5 premium πουλωντας το ταμπλετ, και κρατησω και το compact. :lol: με τοσο λαγκ στο galaxy tab S μου την εχει δωσει.

το ταμπλετ μου το εκαναν δωρο και δεν το χρησιμοποιω, το κουβαλαω καμια φορα επειδη το εχω και σκεφτομαι οτι οι 5.5" θα με βολευαν πιο πολυ για να το εχω για 2ο...

και 1ο ενα compact.

Το Ζ5 θεωρω οτι δε θα ειναι στα επιπεδα του Ζ3, εκτος αν ο 810 ειναι τοσο τερας οικονομιας που δε νομιζω...ποσο μαλλον απο το compact Που εχω εγω.

Γενικα το πιο ομορφο απο ολα ειναι το Ζ5 παντως..το αλουμινιο που εχει τα σπαει..

Ποτε θα ανοιξετε θεματα για τα αλλα 2 ρε σεις??? αντε και ερχεται χειμωνας, να καουμε :lol::lol:

Ελπίζω να δούμε πολυ καλές επιδόσεις στην φωτεινότητα,αντίθεση,χαμηλή στάθμη μαύρου και όσο το δυνατόν μεγαλύτερη πιστότητα χρωμάτων που κρίνουν μια οθονη τι ψάρια πιάνει.

Xperia Z5 Premium – your 4K display technology questions answered

After we announced Xperia Z5 Premium as part of the Xperia Z5 Series unveiling at IFA, we’ve seen a raft of excitement and some speculation on the 4K display technology and how it’s used within the device…

 

So, we’d like to take the opportunity to answer a few of the most common questions around the world’s first 4K smartphone*.

 

Here goes…

 

How is (and isn’t) Xperia Z5 Premium’s 4K display used?

 

Xperia Z5 Premium uses its 4K display when you’re viewing either the 4K content you’ve captured using your device or third-party 4K content from streaming services – all other content (including the homescreen and apps) are displayed in 1080p Full HD or lower resolution to simply optimise performance, power consumption and battery stamina so you can use the device for up to two days without charging.

 

There are many 4K content streaming and subscription services, but these have not yet been fully optimised for mobile. So, we integrated an automatic upscaling feature in Xperia Z5 Premium – so you can enjoy all video and image content within Sony’s Movie and Album applications and popular video streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube in 4K.

 

Why is the 4K display only used for Sony’s Album/Movie apps and everything else (Home screen, apps, browsing etc) is rendered in Full HD 1080p?

 

There’s a few reasons – first up, after extensive user research and testing we found that rendering entertainment content in 4K, but still being able to access and use all the other great Sony smartphone features as normal without compromising on battery life, was an absolute priority for users.

 

Secondly, many third-party apps are not designed or capable of running at 4K resolution (yet), but as Xperia Z5 Premium’s display hardware has a 3840×2160 resolution (4K SID standard) with 806ppi, we feel we’ve created a future-proof device for the imaginations, developers and apps of the future.

 

Are screen shots captured in Full HD resolution or 4K?

 

At present, Android Lollipop (Xperia Z5 Premium’s launch OS) doesn’t support 4K screen capture, so all screen shots are rendered in Full HD.

Doesn’t the 4K display, upscale processing and content capture affect device performance; memory and battery life anyway?

 

Xperia Z5 Premium has been designed from the ground up as a high-performance mobile device. We’ve looked to focus on the best performance in two key areas with Xperia Z5 Premium – firstly it brings a high capacity 3430 mAh battery that will last for up to two days and quick charge capability, which eliminates the need for regular charging. What’s more, Sony’s Battery STAMINA Mode optimizes how your battery is used by automatically limiting processes and connectivity when it’s not needed, and the added option of Ultra STAMINA Mode will keep Xperia Z5 Premium running on its core functions for a week if needed.

 

Secondly, Xperia Z5 Premium features a large 32GB internal memory, with the capability to take a 200GB external microSD card, which offers extra room for 4K videos and movies, and images too. Also in terms of memory, we’ve also looked to optimize Xperia Z5 Premium’s memory on display feature – the data transfer between processor and device is optimized so Xperia Z5 Premium’s display memory technology remembers the display of images seen on your smartphone and caches the image or video so that you don’t need to reload the full image each time you view it – saving on battery power in the process.

 

Why would I need a 4K display in a smartphone – what’s the benefit?

 

Xperia Z5 Premium features a sharp, vivid 5.5” Ultra HD display, bringing Sony’s 4K BRAVIA technologies to a smartphone for the first time. It offers a viewing experience four times the resolution of Full HD, delivering a more lifelike, richer viewing experience achieved in three core areas: a dense 806ppi resolution; vivid colour with TRILUMINOS Display for mobile, Dynamic Contrast Enhancer for contrast and X-Reality for crystal clear clarity

 

Why does this matter? We know from our research that brightness and colour is linked with memory in the human mind. The more vivid the memory, the brighter we remember it, and as engineers we always try to create on-screen experiences that mirror the way we experience the real world.

 

We also believe Xperia Z5 Premium is capable of offering the clearest, sharpest Virtual Reality platform – we’re working on a few things here internally, so stay tuned for more news soon.
