Alfa Romeo: Brera, and 159

It’s hard not to feel sympathy for Alfa Romeo, one of the greatest marques in motoring history but for too many years now one of the least well understood.

 

Even new boss Karl-Heinz Kalbfell (recently arrived from a very brief spell at Rolls-Royce and a much longer career in BMW) acknowledged that fact, in his speech introducing Alfa’s Geneva stars, the new 159 saloon and the Brera coupe. ‘At Alfa’, he says, ‘blood is red. Alfa is one of the strongest emotion-producing brands on earth, but we have some way to go to be so strong commercially’.

 

Which is the Alfa dilemma, because for a company with such problems in keeping up with the market, these two relatively modest new cars drew some of the biggest crowds of the entire first-day presentations, long after the covers had come off. They are, said Kalbfell, ‘the trump cards’ in Alfa’s planned expansion through 2005, and ‘the start of a new generation’.

 

The Giugiaro-styled 159 which will eventually replace the 156 has a similar size and profile but significantly updated looks and chassis technology, new petrol and diesel engines, and new transmissions, including all-wheel drive Q4 variants. And it combines, they say, great driving dynamics with exceptional passive safety and up-to-the-minute technology.

 

And the Brera coupe, also having its world preview, and also styled by Giugiaro, ‘combines sportiness with elegance’ and unique styling. Again, it was drawing big, appreciative crowds, and it promises classic Alfa driving dynamics. Whether all that’s enough to kickstart the new generation remains to be seen.

Alfa Romeo Kamal

Alfa Romeo presented it's newest concept vehicle, the Kamal SUV, at the Geneva Auto Show. The vehicle, which represents a new segment for Alfa, features a 250hp, 3.2L 24 Valve V6 mated to the 6-speed SeleSpeed gearbox, and a fully independent double-wishbone suspension at both ends.

 

Earlier in the Geneva show, Alfa announced it's new GT Coupe and facelifted GTV and Spider models.

 

The Kamal's off-road pretensions are backed up by a 4wd system featuring 3 separate differentials, including a Torsen (Torque Sensing) center differential. The air suspension is height adjustable and ranges from a low, Sport setting which activates automatically at high speeds to a high setting for low speed off-road driving. Aluminum is used extensively for protection on the vehicle's underside, and it rides on 20" alloy wheels with special Pirelli tires.

 

According to Alfa Romeo, the styling of the vechicle retains many cues from the current range, and resembles a road vehicle more than an off-road SUV. The vehicle features conventionally opening front doors and unique side hinged rear doors. The rear cargo area can swallow 400 liters of luggage when the seats are folded flat, and contains an integrated luggage ramp for loading

Aρχες 2006 με την ελευση της sportwagon θα τοποθετηθει στην 159-Gt coupe o 2.8JTS 230hp που περα απο το χαμηλοτερο βαρος, καλυτερη καταναλωση(9,5λτ/100χμ εναντι τα 12,5λίτρα/100χμ) θα εχει και ιδιες επιδοσεις με τον σημερινο 3.2 V6 των 156-147Gta.Ο συγκεκριμενος κινητηρας δεν θα τοποθετηθει στην Brera.

When it comes to the twisty stuff, the Alfa leaves the Subaru for dead. At first its hard, sporty ride seems too uncompromising,with almost every bump

and rut resounding through the body.It becomes even more noticeable on

the motorway where the kind of comfortable cruise that Mondeos and the

like offer seems a world away.

 

The engine makes a traditionally sporty Alfa noise and is as flexible as

well-cooked spaghetti throughout the rev range. Whether you ask it to start work at 2,000rpm or at 5,000rpm, it never complains; if anything, it spins more sweetly the closer you get to the red line.

 

The Subaru is a considerable contrast to the Alfa Romeo. Where the

Italian car’s dulcet tones are musical,the Subaru’s fluttery engine note

sounds like a Volkswagen Beetle on steroids. It isn’t what you’d call

smooth, but its gruff nature isn’t a deterrent to pushing it either.

 

If you want something practical that stands out from the crowd you won’t

be disappointed with either of these.But the Subaru has to make do with

second place. It certainly looks good in a chunky, stubby way, makes a sporty

noise and has a decent turn of speed.Of course the price will appeal, too,

and as the Subaru team won this year’s World Rally Championship, the badge

should impress your drinking partners.

In fact the only things that will put you off it are the drab interior and that toosoft suspension which doesn’t make the best of the extra traction that its fourwheel-drive system can provide.

 

But for the right badge and the right fun factor look no further than the

Alfa. Yes, it costs more, but it’s worth the extra. It’s better-looking than the

Impreza, makes a better noise, has a slightly less dire interior, and, most

importantly, handles a whole lot better.A sharp chassis, high grip and ultraquick steering, all packaged in a practical four-door saloon body, combine to give you a car that’s sensible enough to cart the family about in. When you have to. But whenever you manage to leave them at home, you’ll be able to have a whole lot of fun in it too.

Η Alfa 159 που παρουσιάσθηκε στη Γενεύη όπως και η Brera (φωτό) σηματοδοτούν την έναρξη προσπάθειας για αλλαγή του προφίλ της μάρκας. Στελέχη της εταιρείας στην Μεγάλη Βρετανία παραδέχθηκαν πως η εικόνα της Alfa Romeo αυτή την στιγμή είναι πιο "λαϊκή" σε σύγκριση με εκείνη που θα δομηθεί σε τρία περίπου χρόνια.

 

Αυτό θα γίνει με την παρουσίαση νέων πολυτελών μοντέλων, με την αύξηση του δικτύου των αντιπροσώπων της και με την εκπαίδευση του προσωπικού της για παροχή υπηρεσιών υψηλού επιπέδου.

 

Στόχος της εταιρείας είναι η προσέλκυση αγοραστών που αυτή την στιγμή κατευθύνονται κυρίως προς την BMW και την Audi για την απόκτηση του νέου τους αυτοκινήτου. "Στόχος είναι να φέρουμε αυτού του είδους τους πελάτες στα καταστήματά μας" δήλωσε ο Jeff Culkin, διευθυντής μάρκετινγκ της φίρμας στην Μεγάλη Βρετανία. Στόχος επίσης είναι να διπλασιασθεί το ποσοστό των ικανοποιημένων πελατών που επιστρέφουν στην Alfa Romeo και για το δεύτερο αυτοκίνητό τους αριθμός που αυτή την στιγμή περιορίζεται στο ισχνό 22%.

Alfa Lifts The Lid On Brera

 

Fresh from wowing crowds at the Geneva Motor Show with its stylish Brera coupι, Alfa Romeo is to produce another stunner - the Brera Spider.

 

An inside source at the Italian firm has confirmed that the drop-top will make its world debut at the Frankfurt expo in September. As the Brera was designed from the outset to be a convertible and a coupι, the Spider has a flat rear deck to house the fabric hood, yet retains its seductive styling.

 

Wide wheelarches and virtually flush bumpers contribute to the sleek lines, while the bold grille and triple headlamps complete the look. Even with the roof raised, it stays faithful to the Alfa Romeo style. Underneath sits a platform shared with the new 157, but smaller overhangs mean the Spider is shorter than the saloon. Both two and four-wheel-drive layouts are possible, with the most powerful versions getting the latter option for maximum grip.

 

As with the coupι, the Spider comes with a choice of powerful engines. The range-topping 3.2-litre V6 develops 260bhp, while a four-cylinder 2.2-litre JTS unit provides a healthy 185bhp. It's also likely that Alfa will be one of the few manufacturers to produce a diesel convertible, as the excellent 2.4-litre JTD oil-burner has the strength and refinement to suit top-down motoring.

 

The Spider is expected to hit British dealers in early 2006, within months of the coupι variant going on sale.
