Turbo Reaction

Turbo reaction is an intense action game, where your objective is to shoot and destroy spheres with your stylus. To reach next level you simply have to survive for a given time (which is 10 to 20 seconds for different levels) without missing more than 4 spheres per level. If you fail to shoot 5 spheres in any level you lose.

Your progress will depend on your reaction and accuracy. The faster you are, the more points you score, the more bonuses you can catch. If you are accurate enough, you may catch sniper bonuses and gain extra points.

Pros:

- simple yet challenging

- colourful and well designed

- detailed menus with everything you might need

- many type of games and levels

- price

Cons:

- none that I can think of

Fish Tycoon

One of the games I have had the most fun (and spent the most time) beta testing lately has been Fish Tycoon by LDW Software. The nice thing about this game is that you can even play it in your dreams. You see, Fish Tycoon, like its older sister Plant Tycoon, is a real-time sim that you can leave running even when your PDA is off.

Unlike plants, however, fish tend to move around (unless you haven’t fed them for a while - but enough about me… LOL) and the artists at LDW have done a spectacular job in designing well over 400 different breeds of fish. The object of the game is to cross-breed your fish in an attempt to find all seven magical fish and "once again restore balance to the magical lagoon on the island of Isola."

The effort is not easy, however, and is not something that can be done overnight. In order to successfully breed and sell the more rare species you will need to purchase enhancements and research upgrades for your tanks. All these total up to be about $7400 – and that does not include the medical supplies that you may need in order to treat your fishes fungal or ick infections. At least you always have an unlimited supply of fish food...

You start the game with one batch of fish eggs and $200 to invest in more eggs and supplies. You are then left to your own imagination on which breeds of fish to breed together in an attempt to create the seven that you are looking for. When you do, that fish is then displayed in your “Trophy Case.” Leaving the fish in your tanks will also add special attributes to that tank such as the ability to have more baby fish each time you breed or increase the chances of mutated fish at birth. Selling these magical fish (or letting them die) will remove their special attributes from your tank but they will still remain in your Trophy Case and therefore count towards your completing the game.

While this review is not intended to be a strategy guide (I’ll be writing one of them in the future for the developer…), I will share a few pointers in an effort to explain how this game is played. As I said before, the ultimate goal is to breed all seven magical fish. These fish are divided into three different categories based on how rare they are. You will ultimately need to perform research on your tank environment twice (costing $1950 total) before you can keep all seven magical breeds alive for very long.

In an effort to raise money to purchase these upgrades, put your fish in Tank Three and you are essentially placing all the adult fish in this “for sale” tank in order to sell them to the public. The willingness of the public to purchase the fish at your asking price (or even higher…) as well as the number of visitors to your fish store will be determined by the upgrades you do to that tank as well as research done in advertising.

As you breed your fish you will notice that, unless you have upgraded your tanks, the semi-rare and rare species tend to die a lot faster than the rest. That is why it is important to find a good breed of fish that are sturdy in the basic environment and use them as a “cash crop” to raise money for your upgrades. As you can see from the status screen above, after playing for 69 hours I was able to successfully raise and sell over 270 fish for an average price of $24 in an effort to upgrade all my tanks. During the course of all this I was also able to find one of the magic fish needed and had 49 fish die and be trashed during the same time span.

There are many options that make this game more realistic or increase your chances of winning and those include three different difficulty levels (which affect the stability of the fish’s health) and the ability to adjust the flow of time. While this can be dangerous (never leave the game on fast when you go to bed at night like I did….) it does indeed help you in playing the game. While playing in normal mode it will take a fish about 4.5 days of real time to get elderly and die. You can make the game speed up by 80% by choosing Fast mode and slow it down by 50% by choosing to run it in Slow mode.

An added bonus, however, is the ability to use the game as a screen saver by pausing the game. When you do this, the fish remain active and you can still switch between the tanks to view your different fish but all time is stopped.

The only thing I found lacking in this game is the ability to save your game. After playing one game for almost 100 hours I suffered a major setback. While I busy checking my email on my PC one night my son was checking out a new program I was beta testing on my Zodiac and I suddenly heard "ChaChing! ChaChing!" You've never seen a fat man run so fast. I got there just in time to keep him from selling my last magic fish....

So.... What's a dad to do? I taught him how to play the game and told him to breed me some more. The last thing I told him to do before going to bed was to make sure he paused the game before he went to bed for the night. I got up the next morning and found the game running in Fast mode and dead fish everywhere..... Can I kill him now?

As you can tell from the screen shots, this game is currently only 320x320 although efforts are under way to produce a Zodiac version which will prove quite exciting. It requires 12 Mb of RAM and Palm OS 5.0 or higher. It will retail for $14.95 and be available on May 1, 2004.

I have to admit something: Despite the fact that I own a Zodiac 2, I am not a big game player – and SIM type games are my least favorite of all. Despite that, however, I found myself instantly addicted to this game and have had it running almost continually since I began beta testing it. The graphics are stunning, the game play is addicting, and the overall experience playing this game it has been one of the best that I have experienced on any game whether it be on the PDA or home PC. This game is a winner!

Plant Tycoon

I have never had a green thumb-- but that didn't stop me from wanting to try out LDW's new game, Plant Tycoon. Before long I found myself sneaking away from my desk at work to check on the status of my plants. You should have seen the strange look my wife gave me when I returned from a lengthy trip to the restroom (my Zodiac hidden in my pocket...) and, in response to her inquiry, told her I was sorry I took so long but I was watering my plants... LOL

In all seriousness, LDW has taken their original concept of a virtual pet for your PDA and brought it to a whole new level.

Overview:

The premise behind this game is simple: You are given everything you need in order to get started growing plants in an attempt to recreate the four magical plants from the island of Isola. This is done by gradually (and is a gradual real-time process) cross pollinating different species of plants until you find all four magical species. You begin the game with a greenhouse containing empty pots, soil, water, plant food, and a few seeds and gradually improve your greenhouse and the quality of the plants you have by selling off the ones you no longer need.

As I mentioned before, this is a real-time process so, even if you select the Fast mode, the game will take a while to play. The plants will continue growing (much like your real live plants at home) regardless if your PDA is on or off so be sure to pause your game before going to bed at night or you, like me, may wake up to find a greenhouse filled with a dead and decaying bug-infested mess...

Graphics

While the graphics in this game are rather simple, they are also beautiful. After all, what can be more simple yet beautiful that the bloom of an exotic plant? Whether it is a cactus (I've always likes cacti...) or a fern (my wife's favorite...) they each have their own unique bloom that indicates that they are mature enough to cross pollinate with another species. You can even attract visitors (potential buyers) to your greenhouse by purchasing a fountain for it.

Sound

There is not much sound for this game, nor does it need it. It is a perfect game to have quietly running on your PDA while it is sitting on its charging cradle at the office. It does offer some limited sound effects for when you add soil, seeds, etc to a pot or when something significant happens in the game (when you find a magical plant, for instance) but let's face it, plants don't make a lot of noise anyway, do they?

Control

The game is very intuitive to play although, should you choose to, you can have a tutorial walk you through it the first time. The main game screen displays your 15 available pots in which to use to cross breed your plant species as well as a shelf containing items you have purchased at the store such as special soil or water, seeds, and insect poison. Beneath it is the status of the plant you have selected (indicated by the arrow under the pot).

You are also given large icons with which you can choose to access your seed collection (when you tap on a seed you will be shown the parent plants to assist you in breeding others like it...) or the shop where you can purchase everything you need to keep your current plants healthy as well as improve the species of plants that you breed in the future. You can even purchase radioactive plant food to enhance the mutation process of the plants you breed.

The game requires Palm OS 5.0 or higher and 700K of RAM although it runs perfectly well from the your memory stick or SD card.

Summary:

This is the first game I have seen from LDW but something tells me that it won't be the last. While I have no green thumb nor do I tend to play sim games, this one really became addictive in a hurry. I found it to be well worth the $14.95 retail price and a wonderful game to always have running on my Zodiac. The game can be purchased directly from Handango. Now, if you will excuse me, I have a few plants to water...

All Reviews for Lemonade Tycoon

Roller Coaster Tycoon is one of the best selling PC games of recent years, delighting people all over. It's spawned several expansions, a sequel, and a slew of other 'Tycoon' titles trying to cash in on the mainstream consumer. From Railroad Tycoon, to Airport Tycoon, to Trailer Park Tycoon, it seems that slapping the word Tycoon on any simulation game is a good business move. So Lemonade Tycoon is probably just a rip-off of all those other Tycoon games, right? Just a cheap little game to earn Broderbund a few extra bucks?

Thankfully, that's not the case. Lemonade Tycoon is very much unlike other sim games, where you usually get to build full-fledged parks. It's a much smaller scale, in fact. Instead of running a whole park, you're only in charge of one little booth. However, there are many things you can do to customize your booth, maximize your profits, and make you the leading Lemonade seller.

First off, a bit of information: Lemonade Tycoon is clearly designed to be a PDA game. Yes, the game can be played on a PDA or Palm - but it can also be played on a PC. This results in graphics that, when compared to other PC games of today, look very outdated. Of course, compared to many other PDA titles, the graphics are actually very nice. It's a Catch-22 - but if you don't mind Super Nintendo-quality graphics, then it won't be a big deal anyway. Graphics are not this game's selling point.

You start off very small. You may not be that good at making lemonade, and you're not fast. You can't afford to rent places in the most populated areas, so you're stuck in the rather quiet suburbs. People don't expect to pay a lot here and they certainly don't expect to wait in line. Sounds like a bad job, right? Well, that's where the fun begins.

The game basically follows a routine: you plan a day, you watch the day unfold. Repeat. During the planning stage, you can allot money to advertisement, purchase upgrades, set the price of a glass of lemonade, change your recipe, stock up on supplies, et cetera. Each day also has a weather forecast and some kind of news headline, helping you plan and keeping the game fresh. For example, on a very hot day, people will be willing to pay more for lemonade. That means you can charge more, and you had better stock up on lemons, sugar, ice, and cups (the four essentials). They're also fond of different recipes for colder or warmer days, so adjusting the ingredients in your juice is important. And, of course, it's good to spend a few bucks to advertise.

As you earn more money, you'll be able to purchase upgrades. Supplies eventually waste after time - ice is good only for a day, so you have to stock up constantly, and lemons only last a few days. But, assuming you have the money, you can purchase machines like ice makers and refrigerators - so you don't have to worry about supplies all the time. There are also items to speed up your work, since customers who have to wait in line tend to leave after a short amount of time. Making quicker sales with a better cash register, or an automatic juice maker, will drastically improve your number of customers. Now, once you start earning some more money, you can move to more expensive - but more populated - areas, earning tons of money. The game is, honestly, extremely addictive. You may find yourself playing it for long periods of time.

Another notable feature is the Challenge Mode. Once you've made it big with a full career, you can try this out. Basically, you get thirty days to make as much profit as possible. It's pretty challenging and all, but the neat part is that after you've completed it you can go and post your scores on the Lemonade Stock Exchange (read: the developer's website). This feature not only adds replayability, but a sense of competition and the motivation to do better.

The menus in the game are very nice and easy to use. There's a lovely green background supporting large, colorful buttons. Planning out the day is a cinch. Watching the day unfold can be seen in a box taking up half of the screen - or, if you're on a PDA, the screen alternates between menus and action. As I said before, the graphics are very much reminiscent of a Super Nintendo game. They aren't particularly wonderful, but they work well. You also have the option of speeding up time so you don't have to wait around a long time, or skipping right to the results immediately. Playing through without the fast-forward feature would probably make this game a bore-fest after a little while - thank heavens it was included.

The weakest point of the game would be its sound. Sound effects are good and appropriate, but the music can become very tedious within a few minutes. It loops endlessly, trapping you in a world of insanity... thankfully; turning down the volume isn't much of a sacrifice. You won't be missing too much. Assuming you can find some decent turns to listen to while playing, it shouldn't be a huge problem.

All in all, Lemonade Tycoon is a rather nice change of pace. It's laid back, fun, and has some nice replay value. You may find yourself playing this instead of the standard time-waster, Solitaire. For just twenty bucks, you can't go wrong. And if you have a PDA, there's no reason not to pick up this wonderful piece of work. Check it out!

Reviewer's Scoring Details

Gameplay: 8.5

The game isn't terribly deep, but it is fun. You'll find yourself dedicated to perfecting your recipe, choosing where to sell, stocking up on supplies, setting certain amounts of money aside for advertising, buying products to help you out - and then watching each day unfold. At its core, it's a simple game that can become very addictive.

Graphics: 8.0

I must admit that I like the graphics in the game - the menus are a lovely shade of green and very easy to use, and the actual animated window reminds me of the Super Nintendo days. Sure, it's not the best 2D work you'll see on a PC, but they are very nice compared to other PDA titles.

Sound: 7.0

If there's one area the game doesn't excel at, it's the sound department. Sound effects are good and well-placed, and the actual music is okay, but it does become monotonous after a while. It's not a huge problem, though, because this kind of game doesn't rely on sound.

Difficulty: Medium

The main career mode can be completed in a number of hours, but it lets you move along at your own pace, learning the ups and downs of the business. It's easy to get into, but takes time to master. After you think you've got what it takes you can try the Challenge mode and see how you rank against other Tycoons.

Concept: 8.0

You've probably seen these Lemonade games before - you configure what you'd like to do for the day ahead, and then see the results. But you've never seen it like this - it's super polished. Plus the ability to add your scores to the 'net and transfer the game to your PDA make this the definitive version of the game for Lemonade junkies.

Multiplayer: N/A

There isn't really any multiplayer, but you're sure to catch some eyes from folks walking by. There's a good chance they'll stop, become intrigued by the game, and help you make decisions on what to do. And the Challenge mode allows you to upload your scores to the internet, making for some tough competitors.

Overall: 8.0

Lemonade Tycoon isn't exactly like anything else out there. The pace of the game urges you to make it your temporary substitute for Solitaire, and there are definitely incentives to play through multiple times. It's not action-packed, and it doesn't have fancy-pants graphics or sound, but it's still a very enjoyable experience.

The legend has returned...and is more wildly addictive than ever before! Bejeweled 2 takes the classic game of gem-swapping to euphoric new heights.

Players must match the colored jewels in lines of three horizontally or vertically to clear them from the board. Lines of four jewels are awarded with a Power Gem whilst lines of five award the much sought-after Hyper Cube. Both special jewels trigger their own unique jewel-clearing devices.

Bejeweled 2 features all new graphics, stunning background images, in game transitions and cutting-edge special effects. The game has four standard play modes; classic, action, endless and the all-new puzzle mode and five special bonus modes are unlocked as players progress through the various standard modes, adding extra challenges and even more gameplay.

Bejeweled 2 features:

* Explosive new pieces: Power Gems, Hyper Cubes and Time Bombs

* Stunning special effects

* Awe-inspiring planetary backdrops

* Four ways to play: Classic, Action, Puzzle and Endless

* Five secret game play modes to unlock

* Explore a galaxy of hand-crafted brain-teasers in Puzzle mode

* Play for eternity and collect jewelry in relaxing Endless mode

* Enhanced sound effects and epic soundtrack
