The good stuff:

 

•Small form factor 800x480 screen – seems like no more devices with less than WVGA screen resolution anymore;

No mini size low resolution screen – goodbye to 240х320 screens;

Takes advantage of device's multimedia capabilities including DSP all device connectivity features – looks like the dedicated sound processor won't go anywhere;

•WLAN, Bluetooth and WiMAX connectivity – at last there won't be no devices, lacking WiFi;

•Accelerated graphics with OpenGL-ES2

•As new feature, Qt 4.5 has native OpenGL-ES2.0 support – resurrection to devices with dedicated GPU;

•Hardware accelerated OpenGL-ES2.0 in Omap3 based devices – confirmed about the GPUs. I wish they wouldn't be limited with software;

•OpenGL ES 2.0 is based on OpenGL 2.0, so using programmable shaders is mandatory, since all old fixed function API's have been removed (the latest opengl version);

•Omap3 architecture – goodbye to weak CPUs;

•HSPA ( High Speed Packet Access / Cellular 3G connectivity ) - former internet tablets will have phone capabilities. Just missing the HSPA speeds;

•Vibra service: methods for triggering and controlling vibrations. - maybe that's the vibra screen feedback (but that's not new);

•Device orientation: respond to changes in orientation and discover current orientation – no more devices lacking accelometer (it tends to be that way for a long time now);

some about Qt crossplatforming:

•!!!Same applications will run with no modifications or just small changes in S60 but also in Desktop Linux Macintosh, Windows and even Windows mobile – the only missed thing is whether this works for nokia software only or for any maemo software;

•Tablet has hardware menu button, keycode as F4 – no more “buttonless” popular devices. At least, hardware menu key guranteed

 

 

The bad stuff:

• Finger optimized touch screen

•Designed for finger usage, not depending of stylus – I can't realize what so good about this for all these years. I'll try to tell about my position in “fingers vs stylus”. It's harder to hit an icon/button with finger which is easy to hit with stylus. Accordingly, the finger optimized devices will have these icons/buttons increased in size. Accordingly, the _same size and resolution_ screen will be able to display less finger-optimized icons/buttons, than stylus-optimized one. In other words, it's the same than configuring 17 inch display from 1280x1024 to 800x600. Less info on the screen, but all the icons are like for blind people. So what's so amazing in finger optimized screen, except of possibility to make it dirty with grease and filth way more faster?;

•No small UI elements – the proof of my words above;

•Scrolling from content pane, not small scrollbars – the same way;

•On screen virtual keyboard or mobile optimized small size qwerty keyboard – please eat your virtual keyboard for breakfast. Seems like we'll never see normal qwertys like E90 had;

•No need full size keyboard – look above.

 

So, there's a hope that new maemo flagships will be a resurrection of long forgotten N95 traditions. At least they won't have weak hardware (screen res, CPU and accelerators are like guranteed now). And if cross-platforming will be as good as they promise (that maemo software could be launched at S60, WM and desktops with no changes), that would be even better.

Για εμένα αυτό είναι το κλειδί για το μέλλον του Symbian όπως τίθεται στο άρθρο:

Τα εργαλεία προγραμματισμού για εφαρμογές native Symbian είναι χάλια σε σύγκριση με εκείνα των Windows Mobile και φυσικά του iPhone, δίχως ποιοτικά εργαλεία προγραμματισμού, δουλεία δεν γίνεται ή γίνεται αλλά με μεγάλη ταλαιπωρία και κόπο, τόσο που αποθαρρύνει οπότε απομακρύνει προγραμματιστές που θα θέλανε να ασχοληθούν σοβαρά με την πλατφόρμα.

 

Είναι πολύ ευχάριστο να διαβάζω ότι επιτέλους το κατάλαβαν αυτό - ευελπιστώ σύντομα το QT να είναι διαθέσιμο σε πλήρη έκδοση για το Symbian (τώρα είναι σε beta phase) και τα εργαλεία του να "συνδέονται" άμεσα με την ανάπτυξη Symbian λογισμικού (άμεση σύνδεση με τον carbide c++ ή ακόμα καλύτερα ανάπτυξη μέσα από το native QT IDE, άμεση σύνδεση με τον Symbian emulation κτλ). Γενικά είμαστε ακόμα μακριά από όλα αυτά, την στιγμή που γράφεις για πλάκα εφαρμογές WM με το CF .NET μέσο του MS-Visual Studio, είναι αστείο να διαβάζεις ολόκληρο documentation (!!) για το πως θα περάσεις support για το QT στο carbide c++ ή να πρέπει να αγοράσεις το carbide c++ pro για να έχει visual form editor (αλα RAD) για παράδειγμα!:(

Ο eldar είχε αναφερθεί πολλές φορές στο Ε77 το οποίο θα εμφανιστεί μόλις ανακοινωθεί και το νέο αϊφον και θα είναι εντυπωσιακό. Η ανακοίνωση του αϊ έγινε οπότε, ίσως έφτασε η ώρα να δούμε το Ε77.

Το παρακάτω άρθρο επιβεβαιώνει ότι μέσα στις επόμενες μέρες θα νακοινωθεί το 5530XpressMusic.

Another Symbian S60 5th edition device

According to the latest news on the Web, a new Nokia touchscreen handset has been recently approved by the FCC. The device, which surfaced into the wild a few months ago, should come as a smaller version of the already popular 5800 XpressMusic, due to the fact that it seems to have about the same size and the same button arrangement as the older model.

The handset that has been approved by the FCC comes with the codename RM-504, and, according to spaziocellulare, it is the same model that was recently spotted on the Nokia Europe website and which had the codename 5530 RM-504. NokiaPort.de managed to take a shot of the dropdown menu on the phone’s page showing the Nokia 5530, so the assumption that the Finnish mobile phone maker is getting ready to unveil the handset might be correct after all.

 

As many of you might know, the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic was already rumored to be slated for a September release, and it seems that the US market might see the phone as well, though there are no exact details on when it will actually be launched there. Considering the latest Nokia releases in the country, the N97 and N86 8MP, which came quite soon after the FCC approvals, it might not be too long before we hear that the device was officially introduced.

 

As for the specs of the 5530 XpressMusic, the FCC filing is reported to show quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900), GPRS, EGPRS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a 1000mAh BL-4U battery. Other specs of the handset, previously unveiled, also point towards a 2.9-inch touchscreen display, a 3.2-megapixel camera, FM radio with RDS, 150MB of internal memory, microSD memory card slot and a 3.5mm jack, as well as Symbian S60 5th edition as its operating system. Μπορεί να κάνω λάθος -- αλλά από το "new home screen" το μυαλό μου πήγε σε κάποια συσκευή Maemo διότι διάβαζα κάποιες αλλαγές που έχουν κάνει στο home-screen service του συστήματος (σοβαρές αλλαγές και στην φιλοσοφία και στην υλοποίηση τους εσωτερικά), διαβάζοντας μετά το blog από το ύφος του συγγραφέα μου φαίνεται πιο πιθανό να μην είναι S60 συσκευή, anyway θα ήθελα κάτι σε Maemo-phone διότι το N97 δεν με ενθουσιάζει :(

S60 (5th Edition) θα είναι... Και αν πάρουν πακέτο όλα τα sites της λίστας του Nokia Conversations, θα φτάσουμε μέχρι το 20 (το Σάββατο). :)

Βρε το ξέρω τι λέει (!) - απλά ο τόνος στο blog του (όπου συζητά σχετικά με το S60 που έδωσε ως hint πριν), όπως είπα, με κάνει να υποψιάζομαι ότι μπορεί να μην είναι τόσο προφανές ότι τρέχει S60 (μπορεί να είναι ένα decoy), απλά. Διαφορετικά το θέμα έληξε, είναι ένα ακόμα μάλλον αδιάφορο S60. Τέλος. :(

Νομίζω. Το επόμενο που θα ανακοινώσει θα είναι μάλλον το Ν900 που δεν ταιριάζει με το περιεχόμενο των πακέτων.

Ισως και να ειναι ετσι Γιωργο,αλλα αν προσεξεις οταν ανοιγει το καπακι απο κατω υπαρχει αρκετος χωρος για κατι μεγαλυτερο.Μηπως ομως οπως ειχες αναφερει ειχε δικαιο o eldar και προκειται για το E77;

The devices containing the 12 megapixel cameras and optical zoom could be revealed either at the end of this year, or at the beginning of 2010. Considering the dates, it is unlikely that a Nokia N98 - the future Nokia flagship - would be announced at the Nokia World 2009 (2-3 September), but rather at the Mobile World Congress 2010 in February.
