Nokia has started yet another viral campaign displaying a flip up device which will unlock in two days time. Is this a new device to be launched ? As it seems, it is an S40 device and it must be packing some great stuff that is why they are running a viral campaign for it, a feat that they didn’t repeat for even the 5800, . Wait till the website unlocks ! My bet is on a new S40 Xpress Music device !

Sunday Thought: Should S40 Sport Better Hardware?

Instead of making the smart cheaper, let’s make the cheap smarter

 

Nokia's most decent proposals in this category are the 5610 and the 6500 Slide. There is no S40 handset with a 5MP camera or with GPS and very very few S40 handsets with WiFi for example. This is why I am keen to believe that it would make sense somehow if they took the E66’s exterior and hardware features and put S40 on it. With an extremely decent price unsubsidized (EUR200 maximum) and almost free with operator contracts, that handset could kill!

 

This tight relationship is something I have been pondering about ever since Nokia bought Symbian and decided to make it Open Source. What becomes of S40? Does it survive the Symbian Foundation, or does it get dropped out steadily and slowly? I am more inclined to the 2nd answer because Nokia has done a lot of moves recently to higher the resemblance between S40 and S60: I recently bought my mother a 7310 Supernova and found the interface more similar to my N82 than to my old 6610.

 

Another reason is that if Nokia wants to focus on software & services right now, as much as on hardware, they would need all their arsenal to be services-ready, and N-Gage, Nokia Maps and Share Online only work on S60. Has Nokia been working in the background for a few years now to prepare the doom of S40 and ease up the transition for S40 users to S60? I don’t know, but probably yes.

 

So where does that leave us from the better hardware on S40 debate? Well, I tend to disagree with Devin, and think that instead of bringing better hardware features to S40, Nokia is about to let go of S40 progressively in at least 3-4 years time, and hence negate the reason for the debate. There will be cheap smartphones with fewer hardware specs, and expensive smartphones with cooler features, but all will be smartphones. In the meantime, it would be reasonable for them to make a few higher-specc’ed S40 handsets.

The Nokia 7110 slide seems like what Nokia has in store to replenish its lower midrange ranks. Equipped with a QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel camera and a microSD slot, the new Nokia 7110 slide is definitely not an exciting stuff.

 

Still, seeing QVGA resolution in the lower midrange segment seems like the right thing to do to boost Christmas sales.

 

The new Nokia 7110 slide will also have FM radio, tri-band GSM/EDGE support and Bluetooth. A standard microUSB slot completes the list

Όπως πολύ σοφά έχουν γράψει σε ξένα φόρουμ, είναι ντροπή να χρησιμοποιούν το ιστορικό όνομα 7110 σε μια συσκευή των 100 ευρώ. Το κάναν και στο 6600 αλλά ούτε τόσο ιστορικό είναι ούτε τα 2 6600 είναι άσχημα, το αντίθετο.

Remember the simplicity cellphone from Nokia that we mentioned in April? Of course you don't, because it is one of the most basic mobile phones ever created. Anyhow, the good news for people that enjoy simplicity, is that Nokia 1606 is now available at Cricket stores, with a price tag of $130 without contract.

 

So, what does the Nokia 1606 has to offer? A tiny 1.8-inch screen located inside with a resolution of 128x160 px, and another display on the outside providing a 96x32 resolution, and placed on the monochrome category.

 

As for the battery life, only 3 and a half hours on talk time, or 11 days in stadyby mode.

Nokia 2228 CDMA candybar unveiled

The Nokia 2228 became official recently, marking yet another CDMA cell phone from the Finnish manufacturer. The 2228 is a candybar styled handset that packs a 1.3 megapixel camera for taking photos on the go. The 2228 also features speaker-independent voice dialing, for extra convenience.

 

The Nokia 2228 includes a handy LED indicator light that will flash to inform you of incoming or missed phone calls or messages. The 2228 is set to be available in Q4 2008, though pricing details are not currently available.

Ένα άρθρο για ένα φημολογούμενο series 40 με οθόνη αφής. Προσωπικά, δε νομίζω οτί υπάρχει περίπτωση να δούμε τέτοια συσκευή από την Nokia. Δεν υπάρχει λόγος ύπαρξης άλλωστε.

 

Nokia 6208 Classic has a touchscreen and an alphanumeric keypad

 

While Nokia N97 is the Finns’ first smartphone to feature a touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard, the unannounced Nokia 6208 Classic is (almost) the first to have a touchscreen and a regular, alphanumeric keypad.

 

Yes, you’ve heard well, the giant company is getting ready to launch yet another touchscreen handset under the name of Nokia 6208 Classic.

 

What’s weird is that, from the info known by now, the 6208 Classic does not run on Symbian 9.4 S60 5th Edition (like the N97 and the 5800 XpressMusic). Instead, it might come with an S40 interface tweaked to work with a touchscreen.

 

Design-wise, Nokia 6208 Classic is not what you’d call a beauty, but it’s not an ugly phone, either. Here it is:

Ι think Nokia might have drawn its inspiration from the old 6708 when creating the 6208 Classic.

 

Anyway, here are the known specs of the new handset:

• Quad band GSM connectivity with GPRS, EDGE
  
• 27MB of internal memory
  
• MicroSD card support

Nokia 6208 Classic could be a handset destined only for the Chinese market, but until some official info about this appears, we can’t say for sure.

 

Obviously, pricing and release date are also uncertainties, for the moment at least.

This is the weirdest image of a concept cell phone I’ve seen in quite a while. Despite being disturbing on so many levels, this Nokia gun cell phone is just a photoshopped image. Take the picture of a gun, take a cell phone picture and the logo of Nokia and you will have the most dangerous cell phone out there. On paper! It wouldn’t have space for actual bullets to be dangerous but when other people see you with a gun in the hand they might shoot you.
