The game of Football is supposedly the most popular sport in the entire world. Most of the global population tune in to their television sets just to catch the World Cup matches. Even Euro 2004 was an exciting spectacle to watch and after watching the games, the game of Football gained even more converts.

 

Each year, brings about the latest iteration of the FIFA videogame by Electronic Arts. This year is no exception and I do believe that Electronic Arts has released the latest and the best FIFA yet for the mobile phone game market. Like the game of Football, FIFA by Electronic Arts is the most recognizable Football game available in the world. Yet again this year, Electronic Arts, tapped the capable development team of Digital Bridges to capture the pageantry and excitement of FIFA Football and deliver it to the hands of mobile phone gamers worldwide.

 

FIFA Football 2005 has good graphics for a mobile soccer game. The players are drawn large enough that you won’t be squinting your eyes looking at pixilated midget football players. While you won’t be able to tell your players from each other, there aren’t even any numbers on the football jerseys, Digital Bridges coded the game so that the name of the current player that you’re controlling will be visible on the screen. Even though the player your controlling doesn’t even look a bit like David Beckham, the name David Beckham is visible so you know you’re controlling the famous metro sexual bad boy of the football world. FIFA Football 2005 even offers a replay of the goals scored in the game, this is a nifty feature because you’ll get to see exactly how you were able to break down the opposing defense and find the back of the net with a killer shot. Nothing like massaging your ego to make you want to play more and to be able to garner more opportunities to pump up your ego again. Player animations are excellent although there seems to be a weird game effect that if a player moves vertically he slows down, and he then speeds up when he moves horizontally. The game is played in an elevated isometric viewpoint which does wonders in helping you control and dominate the game. The viewpoint is an excellent choice for sports gaming and should definitely be the standard viewpoint for Football games in mobile phone games.

 

Sounds are basically a no frills affair. You’ll be hearing the occasional beeps and pops from your mobile phone speakers with the special sound effects of scoring a goal. I kind of wish that more work was put into in the sounds department. Honestly though, I’ve played a ton of Football games on my mobile phone, and I haven’t really found one with sounds which are good enough to be kept on while playing the game.

 

The rosters of the teams in the game are based on the national selections that competed in the recently concluded Euro 2004. The best part of the game is seeing Wayne Rooney in the Left Midfield position. Wow! Wayne Rooney is the next big thing in Football world and FIFA Football 2005 lets you control the “wunderkid" as he racks up a hellacious goal total for England. The individual ratings for the players appear dead on target and seem to really affect how the game is played. Players with poor shooting skills shoot the ball less accurately than players with great scoring abilities. You’ll be able to select from 16 International teams, among them are the usual suspects of European Football: Germany, France, Italy, Spain and England.

 

The controls basically run on automatic, once you press a direction, your player will keep moving in that same direction without the need to maintain the button depressed until you select another button which corresponds to a different direction. This simplifies matters and allow you to focus more on orchestrating both the attack and the defense of your team without being encumbered too much by the controls. Like every football game, you’ll be able to pass, shoot, and tackle your way to victory on the pitch. The controls are easy to learn and the game even offers a comprehensive practice mode which will help you master the controls that much faster. When you play the tutorial, it feels like you’re participating in the drills of your national team.
