December 15, 2004 Nokia fights to save QD Nokia has been scrambling to make late deals with major games and toys retailers in a last ditch attempt to get the N-Gage QD onto the shelves before Christmas. The seasonal sales period is crucial to gaming companies, accounting for more than half of annual sales. But with trading already underway, most of the major players were not stocking the QD as Mobile went to press. Game, the country’s biggest games retailer, along with Toys R Us, Argos, Dixons, Woolworths and Tesco, did not have the improved Nokia gaming device on their shelves, leaving only the relatively small Game Station as the only non-mobile high street retailer stocking the mobile console. It is a vital time for the QD, which has a last chance to establish itself ahead of the launch of Sony’s portable PlayStation and Nintendo’s DS next year. However, Nokia has been holding last-minute talks with gaming retailers to turn the tide. Gavin Russell, director of multimedia, (pictured) told Mobile: ‘Three out of those retailers you mentioned are imminent.’ He confirmed that there had been some intense negotiation, but denied that Nokia had been forced to offload the products at a heavy discount. Nokia had forecast two million sales by the end of this year. The QD has only received operator support from O2. Nokia claimed it had shipped a million earlier this year, but critics said it masked the number of units actually sold, which was a fraction of the figure. A senior source in the games industry said: ‘A certain amount of heritage is required. People like what they know and what they trust – Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are credible. I’m sure people rate Nokia for phones but not for games consoles.’ The source added that the barrage of criticism against the original N-Gage made a lasting impact on Nokia’s credibility in the games industry, despite improvements to the new device. Nokia has ‘considerably slashed’ its advertising budget this year, said another source. It splashed out £15m on promoting the device last year. It was the manufacturer’s only ‘platinum’ launch of the year.
