X1/9 Blasts Back

 

 

he famous Fiat X1/9 is on its way back! A top-secret prototype reveals the future of the Italian firm's sports car line-up. And it could be here sooner than you think, because the concept will be unveiled to the world at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

 

Produced by the Instituto Europeo di Design (IED), the roadster is intended to be a spiritual successor to the legendary X1/9 of the Seventies. It has been officially endorsed by Fiat and roof expert Webasto, and has already been dubbed the X1/99.

 

The original X1/9 was based on the Bertone Runabout concept first displayed at the 1969 Turin Motor Show. After going on sale in 1972, the road version enjoyed an 18-year production run. The mid-engined two-seater was renowned for its exceptional handling and value for money - attributes which would still

attract buyers today.

Based on the Punto platform, the X1/99 is just over four metres long. Inside, the sports car has a 2+2 seating arrangement, with long doors giving easy access for both front and rear passengers. The final design of the roof mechanism will be revealed in detail at Geneva, and is sure to feature the latest in sliding top technology.

 

It's not yet known whether the car will become a production reality, but the team behind it will be keen to assess public reaction. If given the green light, the X1/99 could appear in showrooms by 2007. This is the first of several models to be penned by IED, with the firm already working on a project commissioned by Ferrari.

Ford: Προβλήματα για το Focus μετά την χαμηλή βαθμολογία σε crash test

 

H Ford ανακοίνωσε χθες πως συνεργάζεται στενά με το ινστιτούτο που διενεργεί τα crash tests στην Αμερική για να "κατανοήσει" τον τρόπο που αυτά εκτελούνται και ιδίως εκείνο της σύγκρουσης από το πλάι με όχημα pickup που κινείται με ταχύτητα 50 χλμ./ώρα

 

Η εταιρεία σημείωσε πως το προαναφερόμενο crash test δεν υπήρχε κατά την στιγμή του σχεδιασμού του μοντέλου και επομένως δεν ελέγχθηκε η αντοχή του σε τέτοιου είδους συνθήκες. Υποσχέθηκε, ωστόσο, πως το τμήμα σχεδιασμού της το έχει περιλάβει πλέον στις βασικές προδιαγραφές των μελλοντικών της μοντέλων.

 

Η χαμηλή βαθμολογία στα crash tests για το Focus είχε και "παράπλευρες απώλεις". Το περιοδικό Consumer Reports δημοσιεύει κάθε χρόνο ένα κατάλογο με αυτοκίνητα που προτείνει για αγορά στους χρήστες του με γενικό τίτλο "Top 10 Picks". Φέτος είχε συμπεριλάβει το Focus στην λίστα. Για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία του αναγκάστηκε να την διορθώσει βγάζοντας το αυτοκίνητο από αυτήν.

FIAT HAS LAUNCHED FIAT POWERTRAIN TECHNOLOGIES, A NEW INDUSTRIAL UNIT THAT WILL INTEGRATE ALL THE GROUP'S INNOVATION CAPABILITIES AND EXPERTISE IN ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS

 

Fiat has announced the creation of Fiat Powertrain Technologies, a new industrial unit that will integrate all the Group’s innovative capabilities and expertise in the area of engines and transmissions - a new business open to the external world.

 

The new company will operate in 12 countries with 26 plants and 16 research and development centers and will combine the resources, employees and activities of Fiat Auto Powertrain, Iveco Powertrain, Magneti Marelli Powertrain (including Motor Sport), Iveco Motoren Forschung and the Powertrain research activities of the Fiat Research Center and Elasis.

 

Domenico Bordone, currently Magneti Marelli CEO, will be appointed CEO of the new company to be headquartered in Turin.

 

Fiat Powertrain Technologies, which is expected to have a considerable future growth potential, will start operating with annual revenues of 6 billion euro, 20 percent of which from non-captive customers.

 

It will employ over 23 thousand employees: 11,000 drawn from Fiat Auto, 7,200 from Iveco, 3,800 from Magneti Marelli Powertrain and over 1,000 from the Fiat Research Centre, Iveco Motoren Forschung and Elasis.

 

With an annual output of over 2,200,000 engines, some 2,000,000 transmissions, and an extensive range of both power outputs and applications, Fiat Powertrain Technologies will be one of the most significant players in the automotive world.

 

The ability of operating in an integrated way across a larger number of cutting-edge research and engineering centers will bear significant advantages in the development of highly innovative and competitive products as far as performance and costs are concerned.

 

The activities will be managed according to the following strategic lines:development of markets outside the Fiat Group; - enhancement of centers of technological excellence and systematic transfer of results to the product range; - integration of engineering capabilities from the product development to the testing phase, to product life-cycle management; - synergies of the industrialization and manufacturing process; - synergies in purchasing thanks to innovation, technological rationalization and larger volumes; - greater focus of R&D investments for environment-friendly powertrains: methane, hybrid, fuel-cell.

 

“This business, which represents a fundamental step in the relaunch of the Fiat Group, will allow us to operate with greater flexibility and to leverage on the huge potential – particularly in the non-captive market – that up to now has been divided into different units” said Sergio Marchionne, Fiat Group CEO. “The integration of activities, products and highly qualified people will allow us to fully express Fiat Group’s great technological and innovation capabilities.

Codenamed as the F139, these rough-looking Ferrari 612 Scaglietti ‘mules’ represent prototypes of the 575M Maranello replacement.

 

With their modified 612 body panels providing little clues to the new car’s styling, the prototypes are being used solely as platform and engine test-beds.

 

The similarities between the 612 and these prototypes lie more than skin deep, as Ferrari’s newcomer is based on a shortened version of the advanced 612 platform. This has resulted in a longer wheelbase than the current Maranello, providing a roomier 2-seater cabin and larger luggage compartment.

 

This will render the F139 as a more usable Gran Turismo than the outgoing car. Whilst the outer dimensions will be greater than on the 575M Maranello, the new car is expected to weigh less due its aluminium space frame construction borrowed in theory from the 612.

 

The engine, based on the 5,748 cc V12 612 Scaglietti unit, has been out-bored to 6.0 litres and will produce between 580 and 600bhp.

 

Although the new Pininfarina’s body design remains sketchy, the front ‘mid-engined’ car will have a shorter bonnet proportion than the 612 Scaglietti.

 

Its bonnet will also incorporate twin air inlets, these replacing the central duct present on the 575M Maranello. It is expected that the exterior will differ from the 612 as much as the 456M GT differed with the 575M Maranello.

 

The general consensus implies that the replacement will be called the 600 Imola, but in true Ferrari fashion this probably won’t be the case.

 

As history has it, the F139’s most legendary predecessor, the 1968 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ name was dropped last-minute by Enzo Ferrari after it had been unofficially leaked to the press. As a result, the ‘Daytona’ name was never mentioned in Ferrari literature

Ferrari testing 575 successor

 

An Autocar source recently saw the car close up and said that the wheelbase was as much as six inches shorter than the 612’s.

Much of this has been chopped out of the central section – the prototype’s door is considerably shorter than the 612’s. The rear overhang has also been reduced. Even so, the new car is said to offer more interior space the current 575M. The rumoured 600 moniker is said to refer to the size of the new car’s V12 engine, which at 6.0 litres is bigger than the Scaglietti’s 5.8-litre unit. Performance should be further accentuated by the weight advantage over the 612.

"F139" that will use the 600 or more probably the 500 name has a 280cm wheelbase that is a sensational 30cm over the current model in order to have a weight distribution ratio near to the perfect 42:58(insiders talking about a 45:55 ratio that will be the best for a front-engined car the best till now is 612 Scaglietti with 46:54 and Quattroporte and SLR McLaren both with a 47:53 ratio....., will have a cost similar to the 612 Scaglietti and it's target is to offer better performance than the SLR McLaren at half price...

The F139 styling reminds a classic 250....
