I must admit to being a bit disappointed with the S700i as a phone. The signal reception on 1900Mhz was not nearly as good as it was with the K700i, which was a new high point for Sony Ericsson. The reception strength seems to be more on par with the Z600. It is workable, but far from ideal. Then there is the issue with audio quality in general when making a phone call. The sound was not as full as I expected. I tested it out with my partner , Mom, a number of times. We made a few back to back switches between the S700i and the Z600, and time after time the Z600 sounded better to both of us. It had a fuller tonal range. Also, the audio quality in the S700i seemed much more tied to the signal strength than it was in the Z600. My mother could tell me when the phone switched from tower to tower, as indicated by the signal strength bar jumping from a fairly strong indication to a weak one. The Z600 didn't seem to be as obvious when it had a weaker signal, and had an overall better sound to it in the first place. Along the same lines, the speakerphone function in the S700 was quite poor. The volume was not very good for the S700 user, and the sound that the remote party heard was "very bad", as Mom put it. She said it was the worst speakerphone we've tested in a long time. I tend to agree.
Pros: Great display, great camera, nothing cooler this side of Tokyo
Cons: Big, a bit heavy, UI slowness, average reception and sound
