The last time Palestinians visited the Olympics, they broke into the athlete’s village in Munich and brought guns and death to the 1972 Games, massacring 11 Israeli athletes. This Friday, two Palestinians will return to the games to march in the opening parade of nations, not to kill, but to compete. They won’t be around after their preliminary heats. Sanaa Abu Bkheit, an 18-year-old 800-meter runner, is just fast enough not to get lapped in her two-lap race. Raad Aweisat, 17, swims the butterfly — very, very slowly. And they are why the Olympics are important. This is hard to swallow for many people, especially Jews who remember what the Palestinian terrorists did in 1972 and who live every day with the fear of being blown apart — or seeing their children blown apart — by a fanatic wearing a C4 overcoat. But if there is to be any kind of meeting that doesn’t end in death between ancestral enemies, this is where it starts. If there is to be any future in the Palestinian territories for youngsters other than death, it must start with a positive role model. Palestinians will watch their little delegation march in the parade of nations. Others may laugh, just as they laugh at the one, two, or three-person squads from dots on the globe. But Palestinians will cheer, and a few children watching will want to grow up not just to compete for their people, but to win. It is not peace in our day. But is a start toward peace — some day. It is why the Olympics are important. Both Koreas, North and South, will compete, not as separate squads, but as one combined team. It was not that long ago you may as well have suggested that cobras and mongooses join sides. The idea was as preposterous. Today, it is accepted. It is not reunification or the overthrow of the tyranny of that is North Korea. But it is more than existed 10 years ago. And when one Korean wins, both Koreas now celebrate and feel a bond where before was only a divide. Only the Olympics does such things. The lure of profit does not. The fear of mutual annihilation doesn’t, either. The Olympics do. They do because for all the evils attributed to the games — and there are many — there is something about this quadrennial festival of sweat, something about all the nations of the world coming together to contest every sort of sport and skill that touches us beyond the reach of reason. The depth of the effect is ancient. More than two millennia ago, the city states of Greece reacted the same way we do today. Contrary to myth, the ancient games weren’t purer than their modern counterpart. Back then, you didn’t compete for your country, but for your city state. And if you won, you were covered in glory and showered with every good thing in life forever. They built statues to you, gave you handsome pensions, and, if they thought they could, stole you away from a rival city state to play for theirs. The referees in those days carried rods, the better to beat anyone who tried to cheat. The spectators were preyed on by vendors selling bad wine and rotten food for exorbitant prices. A Roman emperor — Nero — bent every rule so he could win the laurel in a chariot race he didn’t finish. And yet the games survived more than 1,000 years until they were ended, not for lack of interest, but by the decree of clerics who thought so much cavorting in public wasn’t good for the soul. If that sounds familiar, it should. The revival of the games in 1896 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman with a mustache bushy enough to shelter a covey of quail, was greeted warmly by a Western world that was just a generation removed from the birth of modern, organized team sports. A nobleman, de Coubertin is the one who invented the amateur ideal, not because that’s how the Greeks did it, but because it was felt that only gentlemen — ladies didn’t compete originally — should pursue athletics, and cutting off the profits ensured that the common folk couldn’t afford the price of entry. Which is why I’m always amused at those who keep telling me that the Olympics are too commercial and that the athletes shouldn’t be paid and that the United States should go back to sending college players to represent it in basketball. I have a friend who loathes the Olympics for all of the above reasons, plus some new ones. He doesn’t think the teams should compete under their national flags. Instead, one team should wear purple and the other yellow — or cyan and magenta. That would somehow make the Olympics special again. I don’t get it. The Olympics are special because, once you get inside the arena, they actually are as free of commercial taint as the sanctuary of a cathedral. Even the sponsors’ beer and soft drinks come in cups decorated with Olympic insignia and not commercial logos. In all the other sports he watches, it is important that the teams are identifiable. He cheers for some teams and against others, simply because of the uniforms they wear. He accepts the commercialism, accepts that athletes want to get paid and paid a lot. But, he says, the Olympics shouldn’t be any of that. The Olympics are what they are, which is a reflection of the world. It takes money to run games for scores of sports and thousands of athletes. A lot of money. But they are better than the world, too. They remain the only place where even small acts of violence provoke shock and revulsion in nearly all. They are the only venue at which all nations come as equals, march together on the opening night, and dance and party together. They have something for nearly everyone, from badminton to track to tennis to fencing to equestrian, to baseball. At no other time are archers even vaguely important to the mass of society. At no other time do people cram arenas to watch Greco-Roman wrestling. And for all the excess, you never see a commercial banner in the stadiums. What you do see are a big galumph from Utah beating the invincible wrestling champ, a father coming out of the stands to help his son finish a race on a blown hamstring, 80,000 people cheering for the last runner in the marathon, four guys from Jamaica arriving in town with a bobsled. What you see are the best of the best in most sports you’ve ever heard of and some you haven’t. Yeah, the big guys in the glamour sports are hoping to cash in — just like their counterparts 2,200 years ago. But the little guys in the sports no one knows about — men’s field hockey, anyone? — aren’t playing for the money, but for the chance to win the only prize that means anything, the only prize that provokes the same awe in those who see you wearing it no matter what you won it in — an Olympic gold medal. Ignore them if you think you must, but know that if you do, you will surely miss something extraordinary, something you didn’t think possible, something that, if you see it, will stay with you forever. That’s why I watch. It’s why I’m addicted. It’s why the Olympics are important.

Θα σου προτεινα να κανεις μια αναζητηση στο google με λεξεις κλειδια " complete web hosting " σιγουρα θα βρεις μια εταιρεια που σου ταιριαζει. για να καταχωρησεις .gr ονομα πρεπει αναγκαστηκα πλεον να πας μεσου μιας Ελληνικης εταιρειας που κανει αυτην την δουλεια, θα βρεις μια πληρη λιστα στο http://www.gr
