Private mobile service takes off Cyprus Mail CYPRUS' first ever private mobile telephone company is now in operation on the island and will be offering its services to the public in two weeks. Areeba, operating under Scancom Cyprus Ltd, will offer Cypriots the opportunity to use their mobile phones with their network instead of the island's previous monopoly CyTA. Areeba's goal is to offer consumers the highest quality technology and modern services with helpful staff to meet customers' needs. The network covers Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca and the main highways. The company will shortly cover Paphos, Famagusta and the rest of the free areas. One representative of Areeba yesterday told the Cyprus Mail that they were currently only supplying a limited number of users with their network to serve as a trial period until they were in full operation. This trial period is important in proving the reliability and completion of the company's services. As soon as the two weeks are up, an unlimited number of packages will be available on the market. "If somebody wishes to become a user with Areeba we have an agreement with Electroline and Hadjikyriacos and Sons Ltd, so people will be able to visit them to get connected. We will also be opening Areeba shops first in Nicosia and then island wide," the representative said. He added the company would be signing an agreement with CyTA shortly and that the first one would be that CyTA users who wished to switch to Areeba would be able to keep their existing number. "All the people will have to do is fill in a form and the request will be approved. Areeba will arrange for you to keep your number," said the representative. The second part of the agreement will be for national roaming. The new users will receive a new number beginning with 96 but will be able to keep their other numbers. Areeba is sure that their offer will be appealing to the public and will entice mobile phone users to become their customers. Areeba will offer four packages, each adapted to meet the needs of each user and offer consumers the opportunity to make the most of their mobile phones. With Areeba 140, users will have a monthly fee of £4 with 140 free minutes talking time and 50 free SMS. With Areeba 350, users will pay £8 monthly rent, get 350 free minutes talking time and 100 free SMS. The Areeba 900 package will offer 900 minutes free talking time, 200 free SMS with a rent of £19. Areeba 1600 offers 1,600 free minutes talking time, 300 free SMS with a monthly fee of £29. A call from Areeba mobile to Areeba mobile or landline costs 2.3 cents per minute (1.8 cents off peak).
