S60 5th Edition brings new, advanced multimedia and Internet experiences to devices with touch user interfaces and sensor technologies

 

 

Today sees the formal unveiling on S60 5th Edition. The new version of S60, built on Symbian OS 9.5, adds touch enablers to the platform, which means it is possible for licensees to create devices that use finger touch and/or stylus interaction. Other additions and improvements include the new sensor framework (adds easy integration of sensors, such as accelerometers into the platform) updated web technologies (WebKit version updated, Flash Lite 3 as standard) and enhanced multimedia functionality (support for widescreen displays, image and video editors as standard). With S60 5th Edition, the user interface is extended by the introduction of touch and with full support for tactile feedback. Enhanced display resolution support and a new Widescreen mode further compliments the touch UI and enables engaging visual experiences. Also, for the first time, the platform includes a framework for the use of advanced sensor technology. This all allows S60 device manufacturers to create innovative new device concepts for a wider range of user segments, while preserving the rich capabilities of the existing software platform."

 

The first device to use S60 5th Edition is the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic which was announced today.

Key highlights of S60 5th Edition

 

• Based on Symbian OS 9.5, which brings a host of OS level improvements, which should increase performance and battery life. The OS is also the enabler for many of the technologies described below.

• Adds touch enablers and tactile feedback to S60. The UI is designed to be used with finger touch or a stylus. The UI and base applications have been optimised for touch usage. Tactile feedback gives a physical signal to the user (buzz/vibrate) when an on screen interaction takes place.

• In order to help enable touchscreen devices there is enhanced support for higher resolution displays and a new 'widescreen' mode.

• Adds a framework to enable the use of sensors in the UI and by third parties. Such sensors might include accelerometers, which enable functionality such as 'flip to silence' or 'shake to unlock'. Third party access is enable by APIs which are available in the software development kit.

• Enhanced support for Internet technologies, including an updated Web browser (more recent version of WebKit) and Flash Lite 3. The browser has been optimised for touch usage, including the ability to scroll around the screen using a finger and finger touch-friendly toolbars and controls.

• Adds S60 Platform Services to the S60 Web Runtime (also known as WRT 2). This enables the creation of personalised and context-aware widgets. This gives widget developers access to many features of the S60 platform, including GPS, contacts, calendar, messaging, audio and video. • Adds new image and video editors (i.e. now standard part of platform), making it simpler to edit media on the device. The image editor functions include red-eye reduction, cropping, image adjustments and the ability to add text and images. • Adds Open C++ (following on from Open C) to the platform. This brings the Standard Template Library (STL) and other popular platform-independent C++ libraries to S60.

Ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον σημείο που αφορά τα προγράμματα σε Java και συγκεκριμένα τα παιχνίδια (ή όσα λογισμικά βασίζονται στην κλάση Canvas) είναι πως πολύ εύκολα οι προγραμματιστές τους μπορούν να ορίσουν ένα JAD flag με το οποίο η συσκευή παρέχει on screen ένα εικονικό πληκτρολόγιο ώστε να είναι δυνατή η χρήση τους.

Συγνωμη αν βγαινω λιγο εκτος θεματος αλλα δεν παει αλλο αυτη η κατασταση.Απο χθες το απογευμα εχω να μπω,και ελεγα να ριξω μια ματια για λιγο και να την κανω σπιτι.Ελα ομως που και σε αυτο το θεμα και στο θεμα του 5800 γινεται χαμος απο links και ηδη περασαν 2 ωρες.Οχι τιποτα αλλο αλλα απο δευτερα θα ειμαι Ελευσινα για ενα μηνα περιπου,δουλεια απο το πρωι μεχρι το βραδυ,που χρονος για διαδικτυο.Και αν δεν εχει,που σιγα μην εχει,ασυρματο δικτυο το ξενοδοχειο την εβαψα.Δηλαδη μετα απο ενα μηνα χωρις επαφη τι θα πρεπει να κανω,καβαντζα μια οθονη για καμια εβδομαδα;:dash:

It'd be better to call this write-up the second part of our review on the Nokia 5800, since it's very likely that we will have to throw in more than several updates into it as soon as other touch-based phones arrive. But for now it's the most comprehensive article on S60 5th edition software. Some of the features we'll be reviewing below have much to do with the Nokia 5800's hardware, and in this sense it doesn't use up all of the platform's full potential - all in all, it's the bottom line, and impending models won't get worse than that, so keep this in mind.

Αργότερα σίγουρα θα κυκλοφορήσουν και νέες εκδόσεις που θα εκμεταλεύονται στο έπακρο ολόκληρη την επιφάνεις της οθόνης αφής. Για αρχή όμως, δεν με χαλάει καθόλου.

 

Το X-plore, κατά την άποψή μου, είναι η πιο χρήσιμη εφαρμογή για τα series 60. Το συγκεκριμένο screenshot μου απάντησε στο μεγαλύτερο ερώτημα που μου δημιούργησε η οθόνη αφής και το νέο λειτουργικό στο 5800.

Nokia S60 Touch UI Presentation From The Virtual S60 Developers Meeting

 

Here is the quite interesting and very informative presentation from the virtual S60 developers meeting in a webinar that presented what is new and hot in the S60 5th Edition release.

 

The overview presentation is aimed for developers but it anyway offers a nice walk through whole new set of possibilities and opportunities for those who were counting the days for the new Touch UI.

 

It is nice opportunity to get some more information on the platform services and many other new cool features It covers topics such as: SDK content, touch UI support and the building blocks it provides for creating applications which are both easy and fun to use.

 

The presentation also included an updated on the Calling all innovators competition as well as the latest about the Forum Nokia Launchpad program.

 

The slides from the presentation are embedded below but Adobe Share unfortunately fails to render some slide properly so maybe it is the best solution to download it on the disk in the original PPT format.

Μπορεί αλλά χρειάζεται χρόνο, συγκεκριμένα πρώτα κυκλοφορεί κάτι νέο, αν αυτό πάει καλά τότε υποβαθμίζει το παλιό και ύστερα το ξεχνά.

 

Πράγματι, αυτή την στιγμή ο μελλοντικός σχεδιασμός της Nokia όσον αφορά τα OS, είναι το Maemo, τούτο δεν σημαίνει τον άμεσο θάνατο του Symbian απλά υποδεικνύει την σταδιακή υποβάθμιση του σε συσκευές mid και low end class (αν και για κάποιο χρονικό διάστημα θα κυκλοφορούν Maemo και Symbian high-end συσκευές).

Όσον αφορά το Symbian, το έχω ξαναπεί, μη βιάζεστε να το θάψετε. Πρόκειται για το καλύτερο mobile OS (το περισσότερο αποδοτικό, ισχυρό και παραμετροποιήσιμο), και η Nokia σίγουρα δεν έχει σκοπό να το σκοτώσει, τη στιγμή μάλιστα που διέθεσε ένα μεγάλο ποσό για να το αγοράσει πλήρως και να το μετατρέψει σε open source. Το μέλλον του προβλέπεται λαμπρό και ενδιαφέρον, θα το διαπιστώσετε σύντομα, όταν θα κυκλοφορήσουν το Symbian^2 και, κυρίως, το Symbian^3. Μην παρασύρεστε από κάποια (αμερικάνικα κυρίως) sites και blogs, που προσπαθούν να το εμφανίσουν ως "ξεπερασμένο" γιατί δεν έχει... transitions. Μην μπερδεύετε το OS με το UI (user interface), το δεύτερο είναι ανεξάρτητο και μπορεί πολύ εύκολα να ανασχεδιαστεί (κάτι τέτοιο κάνουν ήδη με το Symbian^3). Ακόμη και το double tap που χρειάζεται σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις, και κατακρίθηκε από πολλούς, δεν το βλέπω ως μειονέκτημα αλλά ως πλεονέκτημα, καθώς δίνει τη δυνατότητα για πολύ περισσότερες επιλογές. Αν πιστέψουμε τους Αμερικάνους, τότε το Symbian είναι "ξεπερασμένο", σε σχέση με άλλα λειτουργικά που δεν έχουν καν folders ή δυνατότητα multitasking (iPhone), ή που διαφημίζονται ότι "μπορείς να φτιάξεις το μενού όπως θέλεις" (Android) (κάτι που φυσικά το Symbian είχε από την πρώτη στιγμή που εμφανίστηκε το 2002).

Η επίσης διαφημιζόμενη "δυσκολία προγραμματισμού" δεν υφίσταται στο βαθμό που υπονοείται και δεν πρόκειται να αποθαρρύνει ένα γνώστη της C++. Απλά, ο native προγραμματισμός σε Symbian εισάγει τη λογική των leaves, που έχει ως σκοπό να αποτρέψε την εμφάνιση memory leaks (τα οποία είναι μη επιθυμητά σε μία συσκευή με περιορισμένα resources, όπως είναι τα smartphones), και το κάνει πολύ κομψά και επιτυχημένα.

 

Ναι, η Nokia αναπτύσει το Maemo παράλληλα με το Symbian, όμως όχι με σκοπό να αντικαταστήσει το τελευταίο. Το Maemo προορίζεται για ισχυρότερες (αλλά και αρκετά μεγαλύτερες) συσκευές, που δεν είναι smartphones αλλά tablets με τηλεφωνικές δυνατότητες. Αν ρίξετε μια ματιά στο επίσημο site της Maemo, στις οδηγίες που δίνονται προς τους developers, θα δείτε πως αναφέρεται κάπου ότι ο βασικός προσανατολισμός των εφαρμογών θα πρέπει να είναι το landscape, όπου και θα εμφανίζονται όλες οι πληροφορίες, ενώ το portrait θα χρησιμοποιείται ως δευτερεύον, και με ένα κλάσμα μόνο των πληροφοριών που θα εμφανίζονται σε landscape. Αυτό και μόνο αποκλείει το Maemo από τη χρήση του σε τηλέφωνα, καθώς ο βασικός προσανατολισμός ενός τηλεφώνου δεν μπορεί παρά να είναι το portrait.
